5 reasons for choosing e-commerce

We thought it was incredible that Maxwell Smart, the "Super Agent 86", could speak through his shoe in the middle of a secret mission. And we doubted in "Back to the future", that Marty McFly could have a flying skateboard under his feet. Even his time machine, like a flying car, was a bold stake for spectators of the time. However, today, many of these "crazy inventions" are already reality. Technological innovation is more than obvious in the business world and also in Spanish households.


The Spanish National Institute of Statistics (INE) in the "Survey on equipment and Use of Information and Communication Technologies in homes" of October 2017, reveals that 84.6% of the population aged 16 to 74 years has used the Internet in the last three months and that 69% do so daily.

So let’s focus on the field of computers, new technologies, the Internet and online shopping in the family and personal environment. This same INE survey reveals that, in 2017, 78.4% of households have had a computer in their home, which is a 1.3 point increase over the previous year. Similarly, the use of the tablet is recorded for the first time, which is used in 52.4% of households.

In short, access to new technologies from Spanish homes is more than evident, and is so much part of their routine that planning a holiday, buying clothes or electronic devices through the Internet have already become everyday acts. This is shown by the annual Ecommerce 2017 Study of IAB and Elogia, which shows that 7 out of 10 Internet users now buy online. Furthermore, according to the INE, the products most purchased by Internet users are holiday accommodation (54.1%), sports equipment and clothing (53.5%), tickets for shows (47.6%) and other travel services (44.7%).
 

The advantages of shopping over the Internet

The options offered to users in terms of online purchases can be overwhelming. Optimizing the user's time and money will be easier if the following aspects are taken into account:

  1. Purchase products from anywhere in the world. Books, food, computer and photographic products, sports goods and even toys for the little ones. Be the first to buy a product that in Spain would take months to reach the stores. If you also get it for a good price, why wait?
     
  2. Sell everything you do not use. Internet and electronic commerce will also contribute to order in your home. Give a second life to those things that you have not used in recent years. Clear your house and fill your pockets with an extra budget.However, keep in mind that the General Directorate of Taxes, the legislative branch of the Treasury, has announced that individuals who sell goods on online platforms will be subject to Capital Transfer Tax in the form of Onerous Money Transfers and will be taxed at 4 %.
     
  3. Save time and money. According to a study by the idealo.es comparer, for 39.6% of Spaniards the most important thing when making online purchases is the saving. In fact, saving time is one of the most important aspects for 17.2% of respondents. From your sofa, in the office or on the tube on the way home, online commerce gives you access to a wide range of products and the chance to compare prices between different stores and brands. Online stores thus become not only a shopping portal, but also a channel of information.
     
  4. Open 24 hours a day, during 365 days a year. Overwhelmed with meetings throughout the day? Online stores and portals have a clear schedule: 24 hours, 7 days a week. Buy what you need and always put off at the click of a mouse and at any time. It’s as easy as that. And if you have to make some administrative arrangement, it is also possible: according to the Spanish National Institute of Statistics, 52.3% of the population has used e-management to make their own arrangements.
     
  5. A personalised shopping experience. Information is power and, in this case, applied to e-commerce, it is essential to devote a few minutes to the concept of Big Data. From the purchases made by other users, many data are generated on consumption habits, which are used to compile statistics: the best-selling products, those giving the best results (and also the worst), customers’ favourite brands, the most desired products...etc. For the user and for the seller alike, these data are essential; sellers can offer a customised product and buyers can get the opinion of other users who have already used the product and/or service.

The surveys presented by the INE in its studies reveal that more than 17 million people (49.9% of the population) have done e-commerce operations in the last twelve months. Are you one of them?
